Are Blogrolls Still Popular?

When I first started blogging, blogrolls were extremely popular. They were the latest phase… everyone emailed each other for blogroll exchanges. Soon Google stepped in and slammed their fists down and said that blogroll exchanges were BAD! But honestly, I don’t think most bloggers were doing blogroll exchanges towards increasing backlinks. In fact, I question how many bloggers even know what a backlink is.

Often most bloggers who did blogroll exchanges did so because they just wanted to get exposure and additional traffic. They didn’t do it to because they wanted to rank better in search engines. So where does the blogroll stand today? Are they still popular? Do people still do blogroll exchanges? I’ll admit, over the last TWO years, the number of emails I receive asking for blogroll exchanges had dwindled down to almost zero.

I personally still like them and do notice them on quite a few of the sites that I frequent. A lot of people no longer use the title “blogroll” but rather “friends” or “sites I like” and such. Also, it seems that people have become somewhat selective over who they will link to in their blogroll in that they usually link to people they actually know and/or communicate with on a regular basis rather than anyone who randomly emails them asking for it.

I agree that they are/should be used more to gain some exposure and traffic rather than search rankings. At the same time, I think people should not get carried away and have 100+ sites in their blogroll.

If you’d like, I could send an email asking for a blogroll exchange :D

In my humble experience blogrolls brought very small traffic. I tend to not use them anymore.

Even if they don’t bring loads of traffic, I think they enhance a sense or feeling of community and friendship which in itself makes them worthwhile.

I have to admit that i have never exchanged blogrolls for traffic, but did for backlinks and SEO with the anchor text.
Many people pretend to hide these things, but actually these days everyone tries to exchange blogrolls only for the purpose of backlinks and nothing else. No one expects loads of traffic from referral blogs.

Blogroll is for SEO. The probably of getting traffic from blogroll is small. It happens only when somebody is curious about a domain name on the blogroll and clicks on the blogroll link. Just a little note, I am in still in search for blogroll links

I think the blogroll is for the readers of my site. I know those links by heart. My thought is that the blogroll should be used only for sites that I LOVE and TRUST. By putting them on my blog I am saying that I recommend them and I am thinking that my readers might will enjoy spending time there also.

That said I want traffic and I hope it helps me, but the answer is still the same as anyother business. Take care of your customers and they will take care of you.

just my two cents
