Do People Still Use GeoCities?

I remember many many years ago I used to use GeoCities to build some really cool web sites. Today, GeoCities is still alive and kicking and from what I can tell, people still use this totally free service.

Over the years the Internet has changed quite a bit and I think that GeoCities took a huge hit in popularity when the invention of blogging started to really kick in. Since then, Google purchased Blogger.com and things have really kicked into high gear.

WordPress does a very good job with growing their blogging network as well. In fact, pretty much every major Internet portal, including Yahoo, offers a free blogging service. In the case for Yahoo, you have Yahoo 360.

People might not know, but Yahoo also owns GeoCities and they still continue to provide this web hosting service free of charge. The question I am curious about is if people really still use this service. If so, then how does Google take to GeoCities sites? Are they search engine friendly? Can the designer build search engine friendly pages but be scarred from ranking well in Google simply because it is a GeoCities page?

What are your thoughts? I recently built a Geocities hosted web page just to see if there have been any improvements over the years and to my surprise, everything is still very close being exactly how it was many years ago when I made my last site.

OMG!!! GeoCities!!! That takes me back!!! GeoCities used to be THE place for free webspace - then they began junking it up with pop up ads.

It looks like they’re a part of yahoo now or were they always?

I think Yahoo has owned them for quite a few years now. I remember that there were various javascripts that you could include that would remove the ads. I don’t know if they work today, but it doesn’t seem like I can find any GeoCities sites with pop up ads. I still see the horizontal advertisement on the right side of the page though.

My second home page (my first one has been under on a college account of a friend) has been on geocities and it is still live: http://www.geocities.com/areif.geo

And one of these pages (the Tamagotchi one) has been my first Adsense moneymaker and it is still briging me in some pennys every day…

Ahh how much time I’ve wasted with that stuff back at college instead of studying…

The odd thing of Geocities today is that I find anoying all that advertisement, nowaday I would isntead start a blog with Blogger or Wordpress.com.

ciao
alex
