How Many Words Are Your Blog Posts?
How many words are your blog posts? On my personal blog, I have to hold myself back from writing too many words in my posts, otherwise I might as well publish my post as an eBook. On my personal blog I have caught myself writing around 1500 to 2000 words, but on average, I try to keep my word count down to around 500 to 750.
While the old saying is true, “content is king”, I also think too much content can kill the level of interest among your readers. My advice to you is if you have a post that exceeds around 1000 words, you should break that post up into a “series one, series two, etc.. Part One, Part Two, Part Three” format. If you do that, then you will give your readers a reason to come back to your blog.
Think about how you feel after watching a TV show and at the end, it says, “To Be Continued Next Week”, you feel crazy don’t you. You can’t want until next week to watch the show again to see what happens next. Well, the same is true with a blog.
And while I preach this, I too have the opportunity to practice this as well. So, consider this post a learning experience for us both. With that said, how many words are your blog posts?

I try to keep my posts as short and to the point as I can, as I know how frustrating it can be trying to read long posts. (nothing personal, dear). I totally agree on breaking up longer posts into 2 or 3 shorter ones, and keeping your readers coming back for more.

I should send you my posts for “Article Clean Up” prior to going live on my blog.

Actually, I’d probably end up taking all the useful information out and the post would lose it’s effectivness. I’d rather read your posts just as they are.

Only now that I’m diving deeper in niche blog production, I’m starting to care about the lenghth of articles and I’ve installed the Firefox Word Count Plus plugin.

I have been told once or twice to trim some a bit, but overall the percentage is quite favorable.

I just read a post that was 1874 words (well glanced not really read). If a post it too long people lose interest and do what I did either skim it or skip it!

You also have to think how long can a person read on a computer monitor. And how a person can tolerate scrolling down the screen.

It depends on what the Blog is about. If it is a ramble about a favorite Blog subject mine often go in the high hundreds.
If I am writing posts for a niche Blog and therefore writing for the bots, I keep them around 250 and stick the keyword in at least twice.

For the 17 months I have been blogging there I have written 267 posts with an average 392 words per post. Interestingly, the comments on each post average 345 words so my readers are adding almost as much content as I am (although I do add to the comments too).
So far in 2009 I have written 5 posts with an average of 1166 words per post, and the comments are averaging 810 words.
I don’t think I’ll be keeping up those length of posts though!
