How Much Should Freelance Blog Writers Get Paid Per Post?

I have over ten freelance writers that I use towards producing content on many of my niche blogs. I am curious to hear your thoughts on this. How much should a freelance blog writer get paid per post? With the freelance writers I have hired, the quality of the content varies with the experience of each writer. Each of my freelance writers have gone through an evaluation process which then allows me to determine how much I will pay them per article they write. With that said, I’d like to hear your thoughts on how to determine how much to pay a freelance blog writer.

I am a freelancer who occasionally writes for other blogs and I generally get paid according to word count. I also think the pay scale definitely increases with the level of expertise of the guest blogger, so a standard pay scale doesn’t necessarily apply. Trying to figure a pre-determined amount to pay a freelance writer is in the same ball park as applying a standard rate of pay to any other specialist. Experience, length of time involved and specific background or education are all factors that need to be considered when hiring a freelance writer.

I second this answer. I don’t know that any general pay scale would be able to be applied. The main methods I’m aware of are on a per word or per article basis depending upon your relationship with the freelancer and the article being written.

Other than that, I guess it would depend on what you feel comfortable paying and/or feel that particular freelancer is worth. For someone famous to freelance on your site might cost $2.00 per word, but for someone just starting out it might be $0.02.

It is funny I thought you got us to make comments by asking questions and that was how to get free content on blogs.—I have never been involved in paying or being paid to blog so I am interested in the responses here.

Garry since you are experienced here what is the range you have been paying?

Rick

I too am curious as to what price ranges you normally pay (and possibly how to get on you’re payroll), Garry!

Here’s how I figure it. It all comes down to word count and time it takes to put a good article together. I’ve done a few quickie articles of about 150-200 words, took me all of about 5 minutes to bang them out and made $3 per. Some of the more professional writers out there will tell you that I got took, but on the other hand, it was the easiest $3 I ever made.

Larger articles that require more research and effort will cost more, but a writer should never milk the client. When I write for other people, I get a feel for what they want, do a quick assessment of what it will take to make it happen, then quote the client a price. If it takes a bit longer than I thought, that’s on me, not the client.

I think price should be determined between writer and client, without having a pre-determined price. Just because writer A charges X amount doesn’t mean that that’s the standard.

I can usually get good quality 400-600 word articles written to my specifications for $5-8 each depending on how many I order at a time.

I think $3 each is a fair price for 150-200 word blog posts as long as they are ordered in batches of ten or more and are on the same general topic area.

exactly, and they were. And the price you quoted for larger articles is about average.

Since I consider myself a writer and not really a blogger this is a constantly interesting question. All of the writing blogs and forums talk about this all the time. The real question is what is the writer trying to do. Is he trying to create a track record and make a professional living at it or is he trying to make enough cash to handle his monthly hosting fee or to buy a new lap top in a couple of months? The latter you can do at a penny a word or even less with multiple articles on related topics. Creating a professional income takes the same planning, effort and time that anyother profession takes to get started. Me? I am working on doing both… lol.

Wow, I am surprised to hear of such low prices… I wouldn’t imagine paying any one such a pittance to write a CUSTOM article… Although, I guess that there are so many freelance writers out there, so you could probably get away with paying so low…

Do any of you freelancers do it as a fulltime job? Or do you just use it for some money on the side?

I personally don’t, but I know of several individuals who make a fairly decent living simply through freelance writing. A lot of that comes down to marketing themselves to the right people in the right manner. Also, by selling the quality and personality of their writing rather than just the words allows them to charge a bit higher prices and actually make a living doing it. I rather doubt that the ones who charge super low prices are able to make more than just some extra money on the side.
