What Is The Benefit With Using Technorati Tags?

When I visit many blogs I see that the author has used Technorati tags in their posts. What is the actual benefit towards using Technorati Tags? In my opinion, the effort seems kind of one sided, meaning bloggers are helping Technorati grow by giving them free backlinks in posts while technorati isn’t returning the favor by either sending traffic back or by offering backlinks back to the blogs that link to them. What is the true benefit (if any) with using Technorati tags?

When you link to Technorati’s tag space (e.g. http://technorati.com/tag/technorati) you’re providing your readers with navigation to posts on other blogs talking about the same topics you are. It’s still useful to provide your readers with internal navigation (e.g. http://www.bloggingquestions.com/tag/technorati but directing them to other blogs using the same tag makes your site more useful to someone exploring a topic across the blogosphere. As far as “free backlinks to Technorati” — there’s no benefit derived there, the big search engines penalize Technorati’s pages in all but the most obscure instances. And note that the links are reciprocated, your blog post is linked to form Technorati’s tag pages.

Thanks for this explaination. Personally, I’m not so sure I would want to be sending my visitors to other sites across the blogosphere (especially the competition [based on topics and keywords] like that) but at the same time it might be a good way to make your site more user-friendly so to speak and help visitors find what they are looking for.
