What Is The Best Way To Deal With Negative Comments?

On my blog I am often faced with the issue of dealing with a negative comment. Often the first few comments on a blog post set the tone for the rest of the comments to follow. What is the best way to deal with negative comments on your blog? Do you delete them? If so, then I would imagine that could have some consequences. Do you post them? If so, then how do you response to them to get reset the tone for positive comments to flow?

Since my blog is still pretty new, I moderate my comments. I have had a few rude, or nasty comments that I chose not to approve ; especially if they are targeting other commenter’s on the blog.

I think we have a right to delete what we don’t want.

if the comment is just way out of line, i simply delete it.. If it’s a nasty/rude comment, but they actually have a point or are expressing a valid opinion, i will sometimes reply in a kind and polite way (and usually make them feel stupid.. i’m good at that).. often though, i just leave it there with no response.. Since i’m such an internet “nice-guy” i dont have to deal with it often.

PS- if anyone needs me to make a nasty-commenter feel stupid by posting a reply, just let me know ;-)

I have seen your work in the past. It cuts pretty deep my friend. I’ll keep a PostIt Note on my monitor to remind me that you are offering the service. :)

I haven’t needed it yet, but I’ll be sure to keep you in mind if I ever need this sort of assistance :)

I never delete any negative comment. I welcome their opinions, some might be honest with their words and some might be jealous who try to leave some negative impact. I too just politely reply to that comment, and state where I am right at.
Deleting a negative comment just shows that you are wrong at some point. And if you are correct, your readers and commenters are there to support you if they read that comment.

I grind my teeth and wish I could get my fingers around their neck, then smile and be as juicy kind to them as possible.

No it is not true, I do not kick my dogs.

I think I am going to try using more of Randy’s routine. That is priceless when you can shape and mold a comment response in a way that puts things back on the person who left the rude or hateful comment.

I don’t agree with the idea of deleting actual comments (of course the spam has to go) but I can certainly understand editing them a bit (mainly for language) as you seem necessary…

So far though, I’ve been pretty lucky on my site that even when I have comments that disagree with my point-of-view the person leaving them is decent about it and helps to turn the comments into a good discussion.
