I agree with sports and tech (gadgets) but would have to disagree about politics. I can certainly see how politics would get a lot of traffic at certain times (i.e. election time) but it seems to me that this would be very seasonal traffic and there wouldn’t be as much say this coming July (the year after a major election) so the overall average would be pulled way down.

Politics traffic is very seasonal that’s true, but boy you can’t even immage the traffic spikes !

Is the traffic spike enough to average out for the rest of the 4 year period and still have competitive numbers? I’m sure the traffic is large, but a little bit over a long time is usually better than a lot over a short period.

This is why I wanted to voice a dissenting opinion in regards to politics being a huge traffic draw, I have no data to back it up, but in a search for the “type of blogs [that] attract the most traffic” I would be inclined to look at a long-term average and wonder if something as seasonal (and then only on certain years) as politics would make the cut and be that high on the ranking list.

Another thing to consider is that some election years have more excitement than others so this seasonal spike won’t necessarily be the same from one cycle to the next…

Elections are seasonal that’s true, but even if I don’t earn no more from that blog and I let it die, I’ve been largely rewarded for the efforts.

Politics, isn’t only Elections.
I don’t know in your country, but where I live there is something going on politically speaking every day, altough the real spikes are only for elections.

I would say the most popular blogs have to do with either wealth, health, or love. Those three things never go out of style!

My stay-at-home-Mon view opinion is this: Food and Family blogs….people that enjoy their families and have refreshing perspectives help get you through the day.

I think the most popular blogs are lifestyle / alternative news blogs.

Lifehacker, TreeHugger, PostSecret, Boing Boing, and Daily Kos have all been listed as “top blogs” in 2008. People want short interesting stories they don’t find in the mainstream media. Or to feel a connection with others who share the same ideals, goals, or lifestyles that they do.

Lots of good answers here, but my thought is ask google. Some things are driven by the news. I am betting that economics and business news has jumped with the current financial problems in the news. On the other hand, some things are not driven by the news but by peoples daily needs.
