Why Must We Use Feedburner ?

As I see BQ approaching the magic 100 RSS subscribers it brings to mind my old bugaboo with Feedburner.  Several times Google has reset ALL of my feedburner subscriber numbers to zero, and it usually happens when one of them get up towards the 100 number.  I have absolutely no idea why that happens and there does not seem to be an answer on the forums, just more people complaining about the same thing and receiving stupid or snotty answers.

So here is my question.  Why must we use Feedburner anyway?  What benefit is there over just letting your own www.(domainname)/feed RSS account handle sending out the updates to the subscibers?  If the only benefit is stats, I never have used any stats info from them and doubt there is much benefit.

Here is what I think.  The Big G wants to control EVERYTHING, I think that is clear to all of you, and they have accomplished it if you stop to think about it.  By having all of the gazillions of feeds under their care, custody and control they have absobed just about all of the Internet like a big sponge.  They have all of your data from the bots anyway and this is another huge chunk that they can manipulate.

We need an alternative.  I asked this question here before and no one came up with an alternative that I can remember.

I don’t think that there is an alternate. If someone can present one here, I would love to try it.

The reason why I use FeedBurner is because it has options that aren’t available with my standard feed such as providing the email notification service. Also the burned feed has many sharing tools, AdSense and the ability to use the little chicklet to show off the blogs subscription count. Feedburner also gives me a really cool looking RSS feed home page which then allows people to instantly subscribe to it using their favorite RSS Reader application.

With all that said, YES!!! I would totally enjoy trying something new. Is there an alternate to FeedBurner?

I don’t know of an alternative…I didn’t use Feedburner for quite awhile after starting my blog but recently switched over due to their making it possible for me to provide readers with an email subscription option (because Dennis wanted to subscribe) as well as some of the “flairs” they help me put at the end of my posts (such as digg this and number of comments) when it’s viewed in a reader. I do like the stats that it provides as well.

If there were an alternative that provided all of these features but allowed me to host everything on my server, I would be all over it, but as of yet I haven’t heard of one.

…because Dennis wanted to subscribe

LOL

I have to laugh at that because good ol’ Dennis did the same thing to me. :)

So I think we can close out this post having the answer to the question: Why Must We All Use FeedBurner?

The answer: So that Dennis Edell can subscribe. :)

We’ll contact Google and have them also update their FeedBurner FAQ page.

Lol, I doubt that they would do it, but it would be pretty funny if they did. I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one that is so easily influenced that an email from Dennis is all that is needed to convince me to do something :)

In retrospect (all things considered) though, I’m pretty glad I made the switch.

Ahhh practically a household name, eh? LOL thanks guys.

I’ve sent that email to MANY, with more then one sending me an email back a week-month later saying how their subscriptions have significantly risen since adding the email option. :)

Garry - I’m doubting that email will do much good. I’ve kindly persuaded more then one of the “helpful experts” on the FB forum, that they really need to keep their day job for another year. ;)

Rich - No foollin’ my man, have you REALLY looked at ALL the options within your FB account?? I am so not kidding, there is a TON more to do then with domain.com/feed.

In fact, thanks for reminding me. I have an article in mind to address this very issue. As most are well aware, I subscribe to A LOT of blogs and VERY FEW use their FB accounts to the fullest extent possible…..or even the basics for that matter. :)

Please write that article soon as I’m sure I am not utilizing all of the things I could/should be with Feedburner. I did spend some time going through the different menus when I first signed up and think I used a somewhat fine-toothed comb but I’m sure I missed some things.

It may not be too too soon. If you want, shoot me an email and I’ll point to a couple things. :)
